‘Children at risk’ from homes plan at church
CHILDREN will die if a scheme for 440 houses is approved in Otham, a councillor has warned. Councillor Gordon Newton (pictured) urged the council’s planning committee to consider the “children who will lose their lives” due to the hazardous loca- tion of the development in a country lane. Bellway Homes has applied for permission for 440 houses on land next to the 11th century St Nicholas Church in Church Lane. Cllr Newton said: “To put a car
park there is actually a criminal act. What is destroying the setting of that church is 440 houses.” “Cyclists, children and mo-
torists are in danger. It never should have been considered.” Sue Skipp, of Chapman Av-
enue, said the development is “not appropriate for its location”. She said traffic would get worse and the church estate would be “swamped”.
Cllr John Perry said he regret-
ted the site going in the Local Plan and described it as a “mistake”. Cllr Robert Eves said anyone
who believes surrounding roads, such as Spot Lane, where he used to live, would receive minimal impact from the development is “ignorant, naive and stupid”. Kent County Council objected
Cllr Malcolm McKay said:
“One car can pass at a time, but not a car and ambulance, not a car and a bus and certainly not a car and a fire engine or an HGV.” Chairman of the planning com- mittee, Cllr Clive English said the meeting was to decide upon the application for access points to the site and not the site itself. The scheme is already included
in Maidstone Borough Council’s controversial Local Plan.
to the application on the grounds of “severe worsening” of conges- tion to the local road network. A spokesman for Bellway Homes told the committee: “There has been extensive consul- tation with highways officers about the application. “We have been honest and open
throughout the entire process. We are making improvements to local issues such as improving the junc- tions and adding a car park for the church.” Councillors agreed to defer the matter for another time to “bot- tom out” remaining issues.
