Todd's Corner

And just like that, the legislative session is a memory and now we are asking what the interim will look like for Housing!

As all of you know the legislative process is divided into three phases;

1) The legislative session. A time when we are at are strongest and most vulnerable, all at the same time. The 86th legislative session was a display of policy strength and the success of partnerships.

2) The Interim. That time in-between sessions when various interest groups can work

through the committee process, and one on one, to educate the members of the legislature and their staff on the finer point of a particular issue or give a broader look at the overall industry.

3) The Campaign cycle. For Members of the Texas House of Representatives, this happens every two years and about half the Senate comes up for re-election every two years also. This is what I call the “Please and Thank You” time period.

TALHFA, and each of you, have done an amazing job of being present and active during each phase for several years and it certainly paid off with the passage of SB 1474! However, our work is not done. In order to keep the momentum moving forward we must continue to educate and advocate for the most needed industry in the state of Texas, Affordable Housing!

Todd’s Tip: As we approach the height of campaign season, please take the opportunity to invite candidates to your various developments and let them see the great things you are doing! Don’t forget to snap a photo and send it to Jeanne.
