Other recent examples were the popular Summer Sandcastle Competitions and the support for the St Andrews Girls’ Football Club. All of these, he said, echoed the sentiments of President John Fernie, who earlier had stated the Club’s determination to support as many projects involving local youth as possible. Following on from Bruce’s presentation, Eric Fraser took the floor. He joined the Club six months ago and gave a concise – and amusing – summary of how he had discovered Rotary and the ways in

which it had helped both ease his retirement and movement to a new town whilst enabling his own wish to aid the community. He said that, in his short time as a member, he felt that the Club made a notable difference to St Andrews and the locality and that he was delighted to have become a part of it. The evening closed with a general discussion of Rotary’s role in the community - locally, national and internationally.
A social event for members and friends was organised in place of the usual meeting on the 22nd October. 30 or so folk gathered outside the Doll’s House where Richard Falconer, our guide for the night started a whistle stop Historical Tour of the town. From Holy Trinity Church, which has been at the present site since 1412, we crossed South Street to St Mary’s College, founded in 1538 by Archbishop James Beaton, down to St Leonard’s Chapel and College (now the school), founded in 1512 by Archbishop Alexander Stewart and Prior John Hepburn, back up to the Cathedral, built in 1158, then on to the Castle (the Bishop’s Palace) and St Salvator’s before returning to our final destination of The Saint where we gathered for a meal. In a little over an hour we learned historical details, facts and stories which showed that many of us did not know a great deal about the town in which we lived. Richard normally charges for this tour but had waived the cost as he admired the work of Rotary. However it was decided that we make a collection and give him a proportion for a tip which was sent on to him. Being the Club’s nearest gathering to World Polio

Day (24th October) the surplus, in excess of £200, which will to be added to the funds which we would donate for Purple4Polio after our February fundraising.
