SERVICE ABOVE SELF
We were fortunate to have as guests the current District Governor, Alistair McNair, and his wife Ann. Alistair presented the prizes to the winning golfers. Many thanks to all members who volunteered, especially Mike Dow who not only managed this event but the Crail outing the day before. Five visiting Rotarians from Bridgnorth in Shropshire stayed on to play more golf in St Andrews and attended our Tuesday meeting when George Finley from the St Andrews Club gave a fascinating talk entitled My Life, My Art. George is a graduate from West Point and he briefly discussed his early art which involved military caricatures and in the 1980s paintings commemorating the services of Army commands in

Europe. On retirement he established himself in Germany with a studio at Gnadental where he spends 6 months of the year. In the 1990s his style became more abstract and in 2002 he introduced his new style, ‘The New Line’. This was in response to 9/11 and he has continued to convey the theme of peace and harmony in his paintings, many examples of which were brought to the meeting. He also showed us the tools of his trade – a series of paint ‘guns’ similar to those that you would use to grout your bathroom. We were all amazed how he could keep a steady hand to produce such clear lines in his work.
