SERVICE ABOVE SELF
NOVEMBER 2019: ISSUE 127
Entitled a ‘New Members’ Evening’ a diverse group of 13 guests were welcomed to the meeting on 15th October. For 10 of them it was a night to find out more about the role of Rotary with the hope that some, or all of them, would join the Kilrymont Club. President John Fernie outlined the aims and objects of the organisation from its inception in the USA in 1905 through its growth – including the first Scottish club formed in Glasgow in 1912 – to the present day when the organisation boasts 1.2 million members in 35,000 clubs worldwide. Among the guests were Claire Simpson
and Lewis Lennie, representing Fife Young Carers, a group which the Club regularly supports with f inancial donations. Claire spoke briefly of the amazing work done by a large number of young carers, aged from 8 to 25, often looking after their parents or younger siblings. Claire and her colleagues offer help and comfort to such carers who in many cases suffer lonel iness and need support. One of them, y o u n g L e w i s Lenni e, w ho devotes much of his life to looking after his mother w a s a w a r d e d Lewis a certificate naming him as the Rotary Club one of two Kilrymont St Andrews Young Carers of the Year. In addition, he presented Claire with a cheque for £200 for her organisation. Moving on, Bruce

Rollo and outlined his views and thoughts in a 35-year membership of Rotary in two different clubs, Cupar and Kikrymont.. Bruce noted that there had been a great deal of change in Rotary during that time, mainly concerning what had been an extremely formal organisation now enjoying an informality which was a considerable benefit to fellowship and building relationships. However the core of Rotary is unchanged focussing on helping others in our communities rather than its members helping themselves hence the motto ‘Service Above Self’. Bruce stated that the Kilrymont Club was made up of 34 members, men and women from all walks of life, who were l ike-minded in suppor t ing and developing projects which involved many groups in the local community. He detailed a number of the projects which the Club had run during the year, including two separate events to assist local children with educational difficulties.
