Stakeholder Manager for United Utilities Cumbria, Ian McCoy, recently gave a very interesting, illustrated talk on the West Cumbria Project. He began with a map of the integrated network to show how this process is to provide a more resilient and sustainable water supply for the west of the county. The construction of this new system of water provision commenced in 2017 with a proposed completion date by 2022.
He went on to explain how future water supplies would be extracted from Thirlmere and travel mainly under the force of gravity to the new treatment works at Williamsgate near Redmain.
With a series of photographs, he demonstrated how the five tunnel sections were completed using two specialist boring machines, which are 2.8 metres high and carry 40 cutting teeth. The largest machine, which weighs 54 tonnes completed the 1.25K tunnel in the Castlerigg area in just 15 weeks. Ian

KNOWING MORE ABOUT APPLYING FOR A BLUE BADGE ~ CITIZENS ADVICE ALLERDALE ~
“My mum has a non-visible disability, which causes her walking difficulties. I heard something on the news about how she may now be eligible for a blue badge. How can I find out about this and help her apply?”
On 30th August, the Blue Badge scheme was extended to people who live in England and have non-visible disabilities or conditions which affect their ability to walk. As a result, your mum may now qualify for a badge.

Your mum will be automatically eligible if she gets certain types of benefits. These include some categories of Personal Independence Payment and the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance.
If she’s not automatically eligible, she can still apply for a badge. Her local authority will use evidence from doctors and other healthcare professionals to determine whether she qualifies or not.
Your mum can check her eligibility and apply for a local authority-issued Blue Badge at
www.gov.uk/apply-blue-badge. If she can’t do this herself, you can apply on her behalf.
You’ll need a recent digital passport-style photograph, proof of her identity, address, details of any benefits she receives, her National Insurance number and evidence of how her non-visible disability or condition affects her mobility.
emphasised that great care was taken at the planning and design stages to avoid hilly terrain,
designated
environmentally areas,
archaeological sites and urban areas. Using a variety of illustrations, Ian demonstrated the
use of specialist equipment, such as a highly technological valve system on this twin pipeline which takes advantage of the force of gravity.
The members learnt how the site of the water treatment works at Williamsgate has been designed to blend into the natural contours of the surrounding environment and incorporates an unobtrusive green roof. On completion in 2022, the treatment works will be capable of treating 80 million litres of water every day.
Mike George gave a hearty vote of thanks for a very interesting and informative talk.
