BE AFRAID. . . BE VERY AFRAID. . .

Claire Thayers 88 So, you don’t believe in ghosts…or do you? Are you too afraid to admit it?

With Halloween around the corner, we tend to think of it as just a fun time for the children, nothing to be frightened of, just a bit of fun. But have you ever had that funny feeling that someone was watching you?

Have you ever lain in bed listening to creaking floorboards that sound like footsteps, telling yourself that it’s just the house creaking?

Have you experienced that moment with a dog or a horse, watching them watching something that you can’t see?

Have you seen someone in the corner of your eye, but dismissed it as a shadow?

Well I have, on numerous occasions!

One winter’s evening, I was in the house alone with my electric blanket on, in a deep, deep sleep and then I felt the weight of someone sitting on my legs. I felt cold, freezing cold! I made myself look at the clock so I knew the time, to know I was awake. Paralysed with fear, heart pounding, mouth dry, I forced myself to look at the end of the bed…and saw the shape of a monk!

Fear…I have never known fear like it. I’m not a religious person, but I started reciting the Lord’s Prayer, and forced myself to move one finger, if I could do that I could move my hand and if I could do that I could reach for the light switch or turn the TV on, but I was totally paralysed!

Time seemed to stand still, it seemed forever, but eventually, as suddenly as it appeared it went and the whole atmosphere changed. I sat up, shaking, and spent the rest of the night VERY awake, light on and TV on!

My husband was working away, and feeling very foolish I rang him that morning, summoning my courage, I took a deep breath and decided to share my experience with him and was astonished when he said it had happened to him when I was asleep next to him and he couldn’t wake me up, as he also felt paralysed! A total revelation, he had always been a total disbeliever, how could that happen?

The story didn’t end there, as three months later, talking to a neighbour, I was loathe to tell anyone about my experience, or my husband’s, but out of the blue she looked at me and said, “You do realise this was the site of a monastery?” I nearly fell off my chair! It turned out that they had had their house exorcised and that the tiny little hamlet of four houses had all had ‘strange goings on’.

So this Halloween, it may all seem like a lot of fun with kids dressed up in sheets and witches’ hats, but think about things that may have happened to you in the past… perhaps…just perhaps… there are ghosts! Perhaps it was footsteps, perhaps the dog did see something, perhaps that was a shape in the dark…

Be afraid… be very afraid…
