BURGH ISLAND HOTEL TIMELESS GLAMOUR

Surrey Magazine was delighted to be invited to Burgh Island Hotel to step back into the Art Deco heyday of the 1930’s to experience an iconic, grade II listed, luxury hotel on its own private island in South Devon.

J

ust a few hundred metres from the picturesque

seaside village of

Bigbury-on-Sea. This magnificent 26-acre secluded island location

boasts some of the most beautiful golden sandy beaches in the UK with spectacularly wild and rugged cliff walks and enchanting views over the shimmering silvery sea.

An idyllic destination for a romantic

getaway or celebration with 25 luxuriously sumptuous and uniquely designed Art Deco style suites and rooms with listed features, wallpapers, animal prints, nude figures, zig zags and sunbursts adding touches of deco nod to the trend exuding romance

and elegance. Our room

“Bentley” had been lavishly refurbished since the new owner, Giles Fuchs, bought the island in 2018 and others are to follow suit in due course. Rooms come with roll top baths, Salcombe Gin & Tonic, locally- made fudge, and morning beverages that are brought to your room with the papers - a nice old fashioned finishing touch!

Steeped in history, there’s one pub on the island from the 14th century, the Pilchard Inn, formerly a fisherman and smuggler’s haunt. Part of the magic and intrigue of this legendary island is how it hasn’t changed over the years and still draws in guests looking to indulge in a unique island experience and private parties. Burgh Island bridges the splendours of its heritage and past with its luxurious style and spirit of today. Glamorous now as ever before, it will simply sweep you

off your feet and take you back to an era you will not want to leave. Rooms are named after celebrities and legendary guests including Agatha Christie and Noel Coward who flocked there, falling in love with this special place.

When the tide is high, visitors can only come and go onboard the charming 50-year old giant sea tractor. Motoring through the sea with its colossal tyres it makes every journey memorable. The island is accessible by foot at low tide but guests can also be whisked effortlessly across the sandy causeway by the hotel’s private Land Rover as we were! Facilities are eccentric with a helipad, croquet lawn, games room and mesmerising tidal seawater Mermaid Pool with sundeck to basque in the sun.

The island’s well-drilled team welcome you by name pouring a glass of chilled fine Champagne.

fast and loved this

We settled into island life dazzlingly decadent

wild at heart world. Ravishing furnishings, bold statement seating, parquet flooring, sleek cocktail cabinetry and sideboards with mirrors everywhere reflecting the surfaces inspired by this era. Long-standing barman “Gary” plays centre stage shaking and stirring exquisite pre-dinner cocktails to go with canapés in the Palm Court Lounge with a particularly impressive and colourful art deco stained glass dome, a favourite spot for afternoon teas. The Nettlefold restaurant, named after the filmmaker Archie Nettlefold, who introduced the Art Deco style to the island back in 1929, offers

more relaxed dining with far-reaching coastal views. Swanky crystal chandeliers, and fabulous murals complete the look of the extravagant Grand Ballroom. Creating a pinnacle of seduction for guests to dress up in formal black-tie dinner service and lose themselves in the moment with a pianist serenading you from the white grand piano in the corner. After dinner, dance on the terrace cheek-to-cheek under the glistening moonlight.

There’s always so much to discover and rediscover here, however many times you choose to stay. What could be better than a weekend escape, exclusive wedding or private party on your own island in South Devon.
