Ever imagine how unique it would be to travel back in time? It is possible – the Great Canadian Plains Railway Society, established in 1998 in Lethbridge, will help you do just that by restoring a piece of Canadian history which was right under our noises for many years. This Railway Station / Customs Depot became the connection to the beginning of a new country and helped with the opening of the West.

The Founding Fathers created our country with the Canada Act which brought new opportunities for people to explore and develop previously unknown territories. Such a person was Elliot Galt, who discovered a rich vein of high quality coal on the banks of the Belly River. In that time coal was king, and soon his father, Sir Alexander Galt, became interested in the development of mining the coal and shipping it to customers by rail. As day follows night, the rail network, developed by the Galts, and land grants, became the beginning of the territories and future towns and village sites.

Located only 20 minutes south of Lethbridge on Hwy #4. Take the fi rst turn to Stirling and follow the Train Station signs to RR 19-4C, site #65032.

The quick development of Southern Alberta proceeded; the land was surveyed into sections, rail lines were laid, and irrigation was developed. Soon over 350 miles of narrow gauge railway track crisscrossed the area and irrigation provided water to a dry land known only for growing grass. In the fall of 1890, a track crew from Lethbridge reached the International Border at Coutts. A contractor was hired to build a structure to straddle the Border. Known as the Depot, it contained the Alberta Railway and Coal Co. offi ce, the telegraph offi ce, and two Customs offi ces – one for Canada and one for the USA. The American end contained 2 detention rooms for men and women who needed to be held.

The Northwest Mounted Police had barracks built in Coutts just west of the Station which contained 2 holding cells in the basement for detaining lawbreakers. A water tank for the steam engines and a coaling tower for topping up the coal in the tender sat on the opposite side of the tracks from the Station.
