news opinion
As I write this, our new prime minister Boris Johnson is being rebuffed by the EU which refuses to reopen the Withdrawal Agreement
On the basis that we are moving towards a no-deal Brexit, the UK has been turning the other way, facing towards the United States of America, where a certain Donald Trump wants to ‘do a deal’.
Trump claims that the UK and US could rapidly ink a trade agreement – although the US Senate might do its best to thwart such a deal, particularly if a hard border between Ireland and the UK was a consequence (unintended or otherwise) of no-deal.
The question is: What do we actually want from the US that we would be denied from Europe post-October 31? Currently, just 9% of exported goods from the US are foods, feeds and beverages.
Setting aside Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola, soybeans, corn, and meat and poultry make up most of the US exports. The US sends most of its chicken exports to its close neighbours, Mexico, Canada and Cuba – but Trump clearly sees a new market for its poultry here in the UK.
But in the EU a ban has existed since 1997 on washing chicken in chlorine – something that is routine in America. We don’t want chlorine in our food. But more importantly, we in Europe have imposed higher standards of hygiene and animal welfare because our farmers don’t have the ‘kill-all- bugs’ approach employed in the US.
If a farmer has to take care through every stage of the ‘farm-to-fork’ process, that is surely better than adopting a more lax system with a giant ‘kill-all’ wash at the end.
Of course, worries over chlorinated chicken are symbolic of wider concern about food standards. Will a trade agreement with the US mean lower standards? Brexiteers have long moaned about the ‘over-regulation’ in the EU, but sometimes rules are there to protect us.

“As with the print edition of the magazine, the website is a platform to promote the news, events, profiles and campaigns that help shape the business environment in the Thames Valley and Solent/South Coast regions,” said publisher David Murray.
“Last year a third of a million page views were achieved on our website, but for us it’s more about targeted activity than sheer numbers. Because we communicate with our readership through regular newsletters we drive key business contacts to the website every week, ensuring that the region’s decision-makers stay informed.”
In addition, social media coverage on Twitter and LinkedIn ensure that a multi- platform programme of activity is in place to provide advertisers with brand profile opportunities.
“We have been publishing The Business Magazine for 26 years,” said Murray, “and while there’s always a space for print publications in our portfolio, it has become very apparent that our readers want regular news that they can instantly access on digital platforms.
“This is especially true for business development and marketing managers who use our website to find sales leads. A new appointment, a new company, or a new contract – stories like this provide key opportunities for those looking to find fresh targets.”
