The Secret Sauce For Success In Business– And In Life
My most profound insights did not
come while I was the CEO of one of the largest family-owned software companies in the world. They came at the YMCA, while signing up for a gym membership. A woman was typing my responses
into her computer when she asked me the question that changed my life. She asked, “Who is your emergency
contact?”
I broke down crying. I had no one. That day, I looked in the mirror, eyes
swollen with tears, and I saw the leader that I had become—a leader with no followers. I asked myself, “Where did I go
wrong?”
Looking at my bookshelf lined with the hundreds of business books that I had started reading at age 12, I concluded that, while business books had led to great success as a leader of a business—I had failed as a leader of people. Shortly after, at age 42, I retired from
corporate life and I set out on a journey to discover the leadership secrets that had eluded me all those years as a CEO. I cast aside the business books and began searching for insights in unconventional places—uncomfortable places. And it was there—in these uncharted
leadership lands that you won’t hear about in the business media—it was there that I discovered The Language of Leadership.
6 ❘ August 2019 ® As I began to practice this new
language in my own life, I asked myself, “What’s the fastest way to teach someone a new language?” Fortunately, I have some experience
with foreign languages. While I was building businesses in Europe in my twenties, I had the fortunate opportunity to learn French and German from some of the best French and German teachers in the world. One of those teachers, Jean- Luc, was named the best business French teacher by the European Wall Street Journal because of his unique technique for rapidly learning French.
So, What is The Language of Leadership? The Language of Leadership is a set
of perspective-shifting questions, simple “say-this-not-that” rules, and fill-in- the-blanks scripts that you will be able to immediately put into practice the moment I step off the stage in St. Louis. But the Language of Leadership is
not just for people who have formal leadership titles—it’s for everyone. It’s a tool for guiding our leaders, our peers, our customers and ourselves to a new way of communicating that drives increased commitment, connection and growth.
During our time together, you’ll
learn powerful, easy-to-remember and straightforward communication techniques that will help you to develop your emotional intelligence and speak
more powerfully—with empathy. These language tools help you to balance toughness with kindness, intellect with emotion, and results with relationships. While I’ll illustrate The Language
of Leadership using business examples, it’s not only a language for leading in business. It’s a unified language that works both in our professional lives—and our personal lives. In fact, some of the people most moved by The Language of Leadership don’t have careers in business at all.
Why is it important to speak a unified
language both inside and outside the office? Jean-Luc said it best. When I first met him in his home
in Spa, Belgium, I asked him, “How do you become fluent in a new language quickly?” He replied, “Practice it everywhere—
at work, at home—everywhere.” Practicing The Language of
Leadership has the potential to have a multi-million dollar impact on your career, and—more importantly—it will have a priceless impact on your life. I look forward to sharing the stories
of the eclectic people and strange places where I learned this powerful new language at the ICI’s Annual Conference and Expo. Join me on October 28th for a global
journey that you will not soon forget. Watch a sneak preview of the talk at
