UlTRA HEAVY Shell-O-Matic shell making ROBOTS
Accordingly, we developed expertise in making extra large robotic shell room integration. In the last 40 years
we delivered dozens of systems worldwide operating in the heavy load range, with the oldest systems still producing parts like clockwork today.

opener. Man, you saved everything that you cut or ground on it. I ended up with about 35 pounds of just cut offs, shavings, grinding dust. Nothing was wasted or thrown away. When silver hit a high, I sold the silver scrap.” Greg made three quails, one of which is proudly displayed

in his living room. “It’s a life-sized quail in flight. They take off like an explosion, up in the air and then they go. This is done depicting the bird just as he lifts off the ground with his wings fully extended.” Greg went on to describe one of the technical challenges posed by this piece. “The only thing that holds him to the ground is a chunk of broken cholla cast in bronze. We had to figure out how we could tack two tail feathers with 2 stainless steel studs, to the bronze.” Since the sculpture was cast in silver, the artist did not want

it to look like the piece was welded to the bronze cholla. So he came up with a creative solution. “We drilled a hole in the tail feather. I think we used ¼”-20 threaded stainless steel bolts. Then we drilled through the sterling silver tail feathers and into the bronze cholla. Stainless steel bolts were countersunk through the tail feathers and into the bronze to make it completely disappear and permanently rigid then I floated pure silver over the heads of the stainless steel bolts. Then hand cut in all the detail of the tail feather so you can’t even tell where it was mounted.”
Final Thoughts Well, I have to hand it to our wives. If not for them, I would not have gotten to know a great local artist who has quickly become a dear friend. In parting, Greg left me with one final thought: “Investment casting, it gets in you. The smell of the waxes, everything. I was fortunate.” I think many of us can say the exact same thing.
