hellcast, Inc. is located in Western Michigan. The area has long been recognized for being manufacturing
rich, and over the years has been the home of some of the largest foundry operations in the world. Significantly, the largest airfoil and titanium structures operation for Arconic is based there, as well. The emphasis on casting spawned a robust network of support operations making it an ideal location for the 58-year-old operation.
Markets Served Shellcast chooses to compete in a market normally reserved for much larger companies. Many of the components are more complex and physically bigger than what would normally be associated

with a 25 employee company. Company President, Bob Johnson stated, “Our goal is to focus on parts that others struggle to create. Anybody can make the easy stuff and that side of the market is very competitive. More difficult parts, especially defense and aerospace applications, are generally confined to the US manufacturers. It’s the road less traveled.” The company has excelled at shell formation instead of relying on ceramic cores and has significantly reduced their use. “We had to go back to school on shell building and realized quickly that if we were careful and paid close attention to how we were layering and drying we could get reliable results. Some of our notable success stories are parts that were considered impossible to
make without cores. Some shapes never dry internally and we had to create ways to manage the retained moisture during
