Supporters take to AITC’s Sips & Sprouts New ‘make-and-take’ concept at networking event a hit with patrons

by RONDA PAYNE ABBOTSFORD – Make-and-

takes proved their worth at BC Agriculture in the Classroom’s inaugural Sips & Sprouts event, April 12, at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. Following three seminar-style sessions during the first half of the evening, AITC guests were invited to make their own tropical plant or herb planter. “We’ve been doing the same thing for a while so we wanted to do something a little different, something for everyone,” explains Emma Sweeney, AITC

communications coordinator. “They get to do a hands-on activity and learn about growing things. They take some expertise back home and take something home that they put together as well.” Carla McBeth, AITC logistics

and program coordinator, called the event a “friend- raiser. “We’re hoping people will mix and mingle and connect [while we] educate them about different suppliers in BC that support us.”

who demonstrated pasta- making; and Harker’s Organics owners Troy and Sara Harker, from Cawston.

Each education session was 15 minutes long. The Harkers explained their love of farming. “Troy’s family’s been farming this for five generations over 100 years,” says Sara. “There are more organic farms in the Similkameen Valley than anywhere else in BC. We want to be sustainable and organic,” she told supporters who were also served appetizers and desserts students prepared in the school kitchen using BC ingredients. “If you start with a great

product, it’s easy to make it great,” Randle told guests. The event sold out in record time, and limited to 60 guests. “Our objective for Sips &

Sprouts was to show people who we are and what we do, and having some of our partners share their stories through presentations and educating them on agriculture,” says Sweeney. “It

was about sharing our story with a different audience and gaining some new supporters.”
