Spring show attracts exhibitors from Quebec Prize pool North America’s richest

by DAVID SCHMIDT

CHILLIWACK – It’s amazing what money will attract. After working together last

year to create a sparkling BC Holstein Spring Show, the BC Holstein Branch and Westcoast Holsteins of Chilliwack again partnered to create a spring show to remember. Last year’s $120,000 prize pool was already a record but this year’s prize pool made that seem like small potatoes. With the generous support of sponsors, led by Westcoast and its affiliated businesses, Abbotsford Stockyards and Meadow Valley Meats, this year’s show was able to offer a prize pool of $240,000, making it the richest Holstein show in North America this year. Because of an expected

increase in entries, the branch moved the show from its traditional home at Abbotsford Exhibition Park to the larger facilities at Chilliwack Heritage Park. The expected increase in entries materialized, with over 200 animals parading through the showring, March 22. Mark Rueth of Wisconsin, one of the top dairy judges in North America, did the judging. Leading the way were BC’s top three showstrings: Westcoast Holsteins and T&L Cattle of Chilliwack, and Stanhope- Wedgwood of Victoria-Cobble Hill. They were joined by an American showstring, several strings from Alberta and Saskatchewan and, for the first time in 50 years, a showstring from east of Manitoba – Ferme Jacobs of Quebec.

For the last few years,

Westcoast and Jacobs have been fierce but friendly competitors at the Royal Winter Fair, the World Dairy Expo and other top cattle shows across North America. It turned out to be the case in BC, too, as Ferme Jacobs took home the grand championship while Westcoast captured the awards for premier breeder and exhibitor. Ferme Jacobs received the

grand championship and a cheque for $20,000 for Jacobs Lauthority Loana, a mature cow led in the ring by co- owner Pat Conroy of Indiana. Earning the reserve grand championship and a $10,000 cheque was the second-place mature cow, Zimmer Krusader Ava, exhibited by Benbie Holsteins, Duane Zimmer and Robella Holsteins of Saskatchewan. Interestingly, in an age when top show cows are regularly bought and sold, the breeders of the top two cows were still among the owners. That was also the case for the senior red-and-white champion, Westcoast Defiant Addison, which was bred, owned and shown by Westcoast Holsteins. Westcoast also showed the intermediate (Maiz-N-Blu DB Scarlet-Red – also the reserve red-and-white senior champion) and reserve intermediate (Ms Apple Adrianna-Red) champions and the reserve junior champion (Ms Hot off the Press-Red). The junior championship went to Ruti Chief Empress, shown by Barr Valley Holsteins of Ontario, Benbie and Robella.

A picture is worth $30,000! Earning $10,000 for the reserve grand championship of the BC Holstein Spring Show in Chilliwack was Zimmer Krusader Ava, shown by Ian Crosbie (on the halter) of Benbie Holsteins in Saskatchewan. Holding the sign was co-owner Kenton Lindenbach of Robella Holsteins. Taking $20,000 back to Quebec was Jacobs Lauthority Loana, led by Yan Jacobs of Ferme Jacobs. Joining him are Greg Walton of BC Farm & Ranch Realty, Jean Jacobs and judge Mark Rueth of Wisconsin.
