plants ready in 2020. Another variety of interest is 10-79-33. “It was actually the highest
two-year total of yield,” notes Dossett. “The colour, it’s lighter, but it’s probably acceptable. It’s a little softer than I’d like; it’s a few days later than Meeker. It’s interesting so we’re propagating it.” He says 10-84-9 can have
“very large fruit, particularly early in the season, but tends to hold on until it is dead ripe,” he notes. “We don’t do any fungicide spraying in our plots. I think with a commercial spray program, it would work quite nice.” Spur blight was seen in the unsprayed 10-84-9. The highest yield for the
year was BC 7-17-7, at 7.2 tons per acre. “It picked well, with beautiful conic fruit, but it soft and is not expected to have root rot tolerance,” he says.

varieties can help save the raspberry industry. It’s also unknown what kind of pricing growers’ can expect. “There’s the lower prices
the growers are expecting as well as the yields are going to be down,” says Bergen. “I am sure that growers are going to be seeking insurance.” Eric Gerbrandt, who
oversees research for the raspberry council, said ongoing projects include breeding better raspberries through development of genetic tolerance to pests and diseases; enhancing berry crop production via adaptation of fumigation; nematocides and alternative crop inputs; improving management of root and foliar diseases; and determining variety-specific resistance to insect pests. RIDC is also working in
partnership with the BC Blueberry Council and BC Strawberry Growers Association to streamline research proposals. Newly funded projects within the group’s program include implementing integrated pest management on small

to have greater yields with the reduced acreage. “If we get something that

to 17 million pounds,” he says. It’s hard to know if the continuing conversion to blueberries will further erode raspberry acreage before a new variety is available. “Once it’s been changed to blueberries, it’s unlikely to go back to raspberries.” David Mutz of Berry Haven
Farm in Abbotsford also reported that WorkSafeBC regulations governing pesticide application and re- entry are outdated and are due to be rewritten to clarify that the label is the default standard.
“But that could be two
years away,” he says. RIDC’s board was acclaimed at the AGM. The one change was Kyle Thind of P&B Growers taking on the position vacated by Terry Gill.
