Top bulls sell for top dollar at spring sales But quantity outstrips demand
It's been a long time, but I think I have organized my life as a retiree to the extent that I finally have time again for some of my former pursuits. To that end, I have been attending most of the spring

bull sales in the Cariboo with my husband, camera in hand. It’s my observation that it's either been boom or bust at the sales this year, with no discernable pattern to the somewhat peculiar fluctuations in sale prices. To the casual observer, there appears to be more bulls than usual returning home but, that being said, there also appears to be a substantial increase in the numbers of bulls on offer in direct relation to the reduced cow herd in the province as many Cariboo-area ranchers have eased into retirement and ceased cow-calf production.
Harvest Angus The Harvest Angus bull sale
in Williams Lake on March 9 began the day with a delicious complimentary steak dinner.
The high selling bull was 401F and went to Hayden Smith of Prince George for
$6300.00; the runner up (403F) also went to Prince George and will be breeding cows at Bar-K Ranch. Douglas Lake Cattle Co. received a beautiful custom-made belt buckle and jacket as the volume buyer.
Bulls from the Heart
Brad and Aleta Chappell’s Heart of the Valley bull sale on March 30 drew a huge crowd peppered with many
out-of-province bidders and buyers. The bidding wars were fast-paced and competitive. The high seller was Lot 1,
Red Pacific Empire 24F, which sold to Grant Chittick of Chittick Family Angus in Mayerthorpe, Alberta for $13,000.00. Chittick also purchased the second high- selling bull, Lot 3, Red Pacific Covenent 25F, for $11,000.00. Volume buyer for the Black
Angus group was the Blue Goose Cattle Co.; C & C Ranch at Ha Ha Creek, Wardner, was the Red Angus volume buyer. Sale average for the Black Angus group was $4,362.00; Red Angus bulls averaged $5,362.00. Following the sale, guests
enjoyed a great steak ‘n’ prawn lunch, courtesy of the Chappell family.
Close to 300 people at the Best Bet bull sale on April 6 enjoyed a beef lunch and a fast-paced sale highlighted by a sale for the record book.

With his Heart of the Valley Farms ‘Bulls from the Heart’ bull sale catalogue in hand, prospective buyer Grant Chittick of Chittick Family Angus in Mayerthorpe, Alberta concentrates intently on the sale action below him in the BC Livestock Auction sales ring in Williams Lake, March 30. Chittick was the successful bidder on the two highest selling bulls on the day.
