Policing focus of village talk

LAW enforcement chiefs face a grilling at a public meeting in Leybourne. Kent’s Police and Crime Com-

missionerMatthewScott, district police commander Peter Steen- huis, and Malling’s MP Tom Tu- gendhat will be quizzed about neighbourhood policing. The meeting later this month

has been arranged by Bob Ulph, chairman of Leybourne Parish Council. He is hoping for a ca- pacity crowd from the village and neighbouring communities. He told Downs Mail: “It has

taken a lot ofwork to get those at a high enough level, andwith the power to make changes locally and through legislation, to come together on the same night. “I am very pleased that this

meeting will be going ahead and I hope the public will use the op- portunity to question police and our MP on, what I believe, is a

failing neighbourhood policing policy.” Among the topics to be raised,

said CllrUlph, is travellers. Lark- field has been forced to invest in barriers for its open spaces after being targeted on more than 20 occasions in the last five years. CllrUlph said: “Iwill be asking

why the police rarely use their power to immediately evict trav- ellerswho are causing a nuisance, when this Section 61 power is used elsewhere in the country with good effect. “I am pleased Chief Inspector

Steenhuis will be attending. He did use these powers when trav- ellers moved from Leybourne into Platt Primary School, and again when they pulled on to a field being used for a fun run.” The meeting will be taking

place at Leybourne Village Hall on Thursday, July 25, starting at 7.45pm.

Centre’s charity boost

THE teambehind Larkfield Leisure Centre has handed £2,500 to Kent Air Ambulance. Staff at tmactive, the not-for-

profit organisation which runs the sports facility for Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, named the life-saving service as its charity partner last year. It raised the money through a range of events, including gym

challenges and charity quiz nights. Martin Guyton, tmactive’s CEO,

said: “This is the first timewe have partnered with a charity, and we have enjoyed getting involved in organising events to raise funds for this worthy cause. “We look forward to working

with the Heart of Kent Hospice, which is our Charity of the Year for 2019/20.”
