Roadscheme aims to cut town congestion
PLANS to reduce congestion at three junctions on the A20 in Malling have been unveiled. The proposals promise two
freer-flowing lanes in both direc- tions from Ditton crossroads through to theNewRoad junction, EastMalling. Central to the plan is the re-
moval of the bus lane at the top of New Hythe Lane, which has prompted drivers to complain of hold-ups. This will also allow more room,Maidstone bound, for traffic to merge after passing through the traffic lights outside WealdenHall. Larkfield Parish Council chair-
man David Thornewell (pictured) says he supports the principle of the scheme. “The road is getting increasingly
busy at peak times because of all the building work going on ‘over the border’ in Maidstone that is coming along theA20,” he said.
With a planning application for
more than 800 homes nowlodged forWhite Post Field, at the bottom of Hermitage Lane, the traffic problemswill only grow, he says. “The modest alterations to re-
align theA20 at these junctions, re- move islands and the bus lanewill ease congestion, but they won’t make journey times any quicker. “It really is a case of ‘holding the
line’ in light of advancing devel- opment in the area.We hope if it is
