Abandoned foal finds home and a newmum

A NEWBORN foal that was thrownover a fence andleft todie has been saved by vets inMere- worth. The filly, called Honey, was

taken to Bell Equine Veterinary Clinic in Butchers Lane, suffering fromdehydration and sepsis. The surgery believes shewas less

than a day old when she was brought in. “Despite her extreme illness, she

displayed an extraordinary fight- ing spirit.Withinminutes of arriv- ing at our clinic, we were able to teach her howtodrinkmilk froma bucket,” a spokesman said. But hours later, Honey “crashed

and stopped breathing” and there were fearsher kidneyswere failing. “It took a great team effort to

support her through the following hours, with our specialist-ledmed- ical teamworking round the clock to give her every chance of sur- vival,” the spokesman said.

KateMorris,who set up the Lit-

tle Sweep’s Fund to treat aban- doned ponies after rescuing her first from Biddenden, near the Three Chimneys pub, said Honey had a “heck of a turnaround” fol- lowing treatment. The filly is nowstaying atKate’s

studinAshford, andhas been “fos- tered” by a horsewho lost her own foal just 24 hours beforeHoney ar- rived. TheBellEquine spokesman said:

“We are proud and grateful to be part of this incredible story. We hope Honey will continue to go fromstrength to strengthwith her newmum.” The foal was found abandoned

in a field near Orpington by a mother and daughterwho hope to rehome Honey when she is old enough. Kate said: “Unfortunately, this is

the peak time for abandoned foals because it’s the breeding season.”
