LIVE 24-SEVEN BEV BEVAN'S

CD PICKS - JULY 2019 Holding Things Together – The Merle Haggard Songbook (ACE)

American songwriter, singer, guitarist and fiddler Merle Ronald Haggard was born in 1937 in Oildale, California during the Great Depression. From grinding poverty and spells in prison, he went on to become one of country music’s biggest stars. Much like Woody Guthrie, most of his songs were based on his own real life experiences. He died in 2016, just shy of his 80th birthday. Few country singer/songwriters attracted the level of attention outside of traditional country music circles that Merle Haggard did.

Holding Things Together comprises 24 Haggard compositions by a diverse and eclectic mix of performers. Highlights include Swinging Doors (Jerry Lee Lewis); The Legend Of Bonnie And Clyde (Tammy Wynette); White Line Fever (The Flying Burrito Bros); Honky Tonk Night Time Man (Lynrd Skynrd); Life In Prison (The Byrds); Everybody’s Had The Blues (Brenda Lee); Mama Tried (Grateful Dead); I Take A Lot Of Pride In What I Am (Dean Martin); Life’s Like Poetry (Dolly Parton); Sing Me Back Home (The Everly Brothers); I Can’t Hold Myself In Line (Elvin Bishop).

Ronnie Lane – Just For A Moment – Music 1973-1997 (Universal) 122

Ronnie Lane was bass player with the Small Faces and the Faces and songwriter behind iconic songs Ooh La La, The Poacher and Itchycoo Park. In many ways Ronnie (who I worked with in my Move days) remains an enigma in the story of rock’n’roll. His sense of disillusion with the rock’n’roll lifestyle led him to leave his highly successful band for a ramshackle country farm. He assembled a new band, Ronnie Lane’s Slim Chance, and created The Passing Show – an ambitious circus tent tour of Britain with assorted clowns, acrobats and comedians. He also built his own recording studio, The Lane Mobile Studio, itself an icon in the history of British rock recordings. Sadly the symptoms of MS would eventually surface and in the eighties Ronnie moved to Austin, Texas where he still wrote and performed up until his death in 1997.

This is the first time that a fully comprehensive look at Ronnie Lane’s post-Faces career has been undertaken. This superb boxed collection includes Ronnie’s four solo albums: Anymore For Anymore; Ronnie Lane’s Slim Chance; See Me; and Ronnie Mahoney’s Last Stand, plus live tracks and previously never released material.

It’s available as a six-CD hardback book package, a one-CD Best Of format or a two-LP Best Of collection.

Jerry Lee Lewis – Golden Hits / The Greatest Live Show on Earth / Live at the Star Club, Hamburg / By Request – More of the Greatest Live Show on Earth (Beat Goes On)

Jerry Lee Lewis was born on September 29th 1935 and went on to become the personification of American rock’n’roll music, with his rowdy, raw, exciting style of singing and piano playing. His wild stage shows brought many a fifties’ crowd to near hysteria.

This great value four-CD box set is worth having for the Golden Hits album alone as all 12 tracks just pure classic cuts: Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On; Fools Like Me; I’ll Make It All Up To You; Down The Line; End Of The Road; Breathless; Crazy Arms; You Win Again; High School Confidential; Your Cheating Heart; and Great Balls Of Fire (a song that the Bev Bevan Band play on the Jasper Carrott Stand Up And Rock tour).

The three remaining live albums include great Jerry Lee Lewis versions of rock’n’roll standards What’d I Say; Money; Good Golly Miss Molly; Long Tall Sally; Memphis Tennessee; Little Queenie; Johnnie B Goode; and Roll Over Beethoven (a top ten hit for my old band ELO in 1973). Unforgettable; Stardust; Let There Be Love; and Smile.
