FERRARI PORTOFINO THE EVERYDAY FERRARI…


complete with a centred, supersized tachometer (available in a number of hues) and two digital monitors. Drivers can adjust a pair of monitors on either side of the tachometer to engage navigation, media, telemetry and speed readout information. Our car included an optional 8.8-inch screen which integrated within the passenger side dash and showed an assortment of performance and entertainment data. This proved to be incredibly useful on our road trip. To the driver’s left you find the reverse gear, manual/auto shift selection and launch control system.

Test driving a Ferrari is always guaranteed to be a special and unique experience; staying at The Old Course Hotel at St Andrews, Scotland added to it! Arriving at the hotel we were greeted by a very special sight – not one, but nine Ferrari Portofinos ranging from classic red through to white, black, silver, grey and blue.


The Ferrari Portofino takes its name from a charming village on the Italian Riviera and succeeds the previous V8 grand tourer, the California T. Using new components, it’s significantly lighter, plus combined with a 40cv higher output than the California T, it delivers a significant improvement in performance, as well as a drop in emissions!


The most versatile model in the range, the Portofino is designed to be driven every day, effortlessly converting from an authentic ‘Berlinetta’ coupe to a drop top in a matter of seconds. It’s incredibly sleek – the three-piece folding hardtop flows effortlessly into the wider, narrower rear end, adopting a striking fastback silhouette. At the front, the Portofino showcases sculpted air inlets, an impressive grille and flowing headlights. Raised, extended haunches give the car a powerful stance and from behind it is visually lowered by oversized quad exhaust ports and a dramatic diffuser.


Ferrari describe the interior as a +2. The seats are the product of extensive research, the design allowing for an extra 5cm of rear space and there is an optional 18-way electric seat adjustment enabling longitudinal, height, angle and backrest adjustment. This served us well on our 220-mile journey.


The steering wheel makes you feel part racer! It was difficult to prevent my husband from pressing every button and flicking every toggle (which he does), but the truth is, each control has a specific function, ultimately allowing the driver to keep both hands on the wheel at all times. Starting the 3.9ltr, twin-turbocharged V8 engine is simple and thrilling – a mere touch of a button. When idling with the valve closed it emits a moderate sound ideal for city environments. Before we set off, we seamlessly opened the roof (of course) which took a mere 14 seconds. Luggage secure in the boot, which I’m pleased to say comfortably fits two cabin cases and a handbag, we selected our first destination on the 10.25” full HD multi-touch screen featuring new 3D maps, turned up the music and, selecting the comfort driving mode on the steering wheel, we started to move away.


In comfort mode the valve opens creating a distinctive but moderate engine sound, one that isn’t too loud to upset your neighbours. Starting with its automatic setting, we found the Portofino swiftly works between gears and doesn’t hesitate to upshift (even in Sport) unless sufficient throttle input is detected. Cruising around the city we continued in comfort and automatic mode and were pleasantly surprised at how effortless driving was. Yes, you could feel the power because after all the Portofino does produce a robust 591 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque. The seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, firing the Portofino to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 199 mph.
