The Methuen Arms

T
he Methuen Arms, a former coaching inn, has a noble reputation as a first-rate
local pub-restaurant on Corsham’s charming high street. Head chef and co-manager Leigh Evans, (alongside the fantastic Maddy, a winning duo), is the Methuen Arms’ secret weapon. It’s been quite the year for his kitchen, having scooped their third AA Rosette and recently been shortlisted for The Craft Guild of Chefs. The menu is a delectable assortment of dishes made only with local, top quality ingredients creating simple, seasonal dishes, crammed full of exciting flavours. Leigh’s pride and joy is his allotment, found nestled at the back of The Methuen’s impressive gardens, where he grows his own herbs, salads and seasonal vegetables. They even have three beehives producing honey for the kitchen and their charming chocolate boxes served with the coffee. Leigh’s home-grown fare complements locally bought produce to enhance the offering of the restaurant and create dishes that are above and beyond your usual pub grub.
It’s the hotel of this handsome Georgian inn that I really want to celebrate today. Each of the 19 beautiful bedrooms has comfy armchairs, Roberts radios, mini fridges plus generous sized Bramley products to help yourself to. 14 bedrooms are in the main

building with five newer rooms recently created in the old stables. The rooms in the main building have a traditional look, with vast, comfy four-poster beds and all with calming Farrow & Ball shades of grey and soft red. There are lovely antique leather-topped desks, sash windows overlooking the gardens. The new bedrooms have a bolder, more contemporary design and successfully marry comfort and country style, as well as a little luxury and a touch of opulence. There is even a family room with a fun bunk bed nestled into the walls.
Corsham is something of a hidden gem in Wiltshire and the perfect
destination for a little staycation. Fans of Poldark can rejoice knowing they are resting their heads within the backdrop to the Cornish drama’s first two series. honey- coloured shop fronts line the cobbled high street, leading towards Corsham Court, the Elizabethan manor set in grounds beautifully designed by Capability Brown.
The Methuen is somewhere that appeals to its community as well as travellers, which gives it a wonderful, lively vibe. Throughout the summer, the inn plays host to some great events as well, so save the dates. Highlights include The Methuen Festival on July 20th and the rum Festival on the 24th August.
