Are you sure it’s costume jewellery?

Words supplied by Wessex Auction Rooms A

re you sure all those necklaces, pearls, rings and brooches that you’ve left in

the jewellery box, that you let the kids play with, wear to work or are considering taking to the car boot sale are only costume jewellery? Why not take them along to Wessex Auction Rooms, located just off junction 17 of the M4 to see their head of jewellery and silver Izzie Balmer FGA DGA. Izzie will sift through your jewellery pulling out the hidden gems that you didn’t even know existed. Wessex Auction Rooms hold several specialist jewellery and silver auctions a year and have seen these hidden gems turn into auction highlights time and time again.

Recently discovered in a box of costume jewellery was a rare George Edward Hunt Arts and Crafts brooch. The lady who brought it in had no idea how special the brooch was, thinking it was merely a piece of costume jewellery. Handcrafted in silver, set with moonstones, sapphires and tiny enamelled leaves the brooch saw strong interest from the room, internet and phone lines, with the gavel finally falling at £2,100. Also found in a box of costume jewellery was

a simple Victorian moonstone lace pin. Formed of a single cabochon moonstone in yellow gold rub over setting it sold for £220.

Silver is also often over-looked or simply mistaken for silver plate when in fact it’s solid silver. “People regularly bring their old inherited silver for assessment thinking it to be nothing in particular but just wanting to get it checked out” comments Izzie Balmer. “It’s one of the joys of the job to be able to tell someone that what they were about to throw in the bin or take to a car boot is actually worth something.”

Izzie, who is soon to be seen on our TV screens as BBC1 Antiques Road Trip’s newest expert will be launching a weekly jewellery and silver valuation morning at the Post Office and Coffee Shop in Sutton Benger. Starting on Wednesday 3rd July, 10am-1pm, Izzie will be offering free jewellery and silver valuations, with the opportunity to enter your items into a forthcoming auction, so dig out grannie’s silver from the attic, dust off the silver at the back of the dresser; bring that box of costume jewellery that you just don’t wear any more, or your aunt’s jewellery that really isn’t to your taste.

You can also visit Izzie at Wessex Auction Rooms, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday’s with no appointment necessary. For more information please call 01249 733988 or email enquiries@ wessexauctionrooms.co.uk
