VISIT Corsham

Corsham Town Council explains why the town is such a great place.

F

rom starring on the small screen in Poldark to exotic peacocks and acres of beautiful countryside to

explore, Corsham is a hidden gem – and there’s always something to do there, too.

With its historic buildings and acres of glorious countryside on the doorstep; its exotic, flamboyant, and loud, resident peacocks wandering the street, and a starring role in films and TV series – Ross Poldark brooded his way around here for the hit BBC series – the Wiltshire market town of Corsham is something of a hidden treasure. It’s also one of the Top 10 places to live in the South West, according to The Sunday Times’ annual poll. But don’t be fooled into thinking this is a sleepy, country town…

Corsham has over 100 clubs and organisations in the town, covering everything from arts to yoga, with sports clubs, young people’s organisations, church groups and more. You can find details of these in the What’s On and Town Guides produced by Corsham Town Council or at www.corsham.gov.uk. There’s a What’s On section on the website too, which will let you know about the latest activities happening in the town. There’s also film, theatre, live comedy, music and more at The Pound - Corsham’s gallery, theatre, cinema and cafe bar (poundarts.org. uk), where you’ll also find a huge range of regular clubs and events to join in. There’s Springfield Campus (www.springfieldcampus.org.uk), the town’s leisure centre with its swimming pool and gym, but you’ll also find the library here (check out all the activities they offer via their

The campus sits alongside Springfield Rec which is home to a great play park, a BMX track, skate park, parkour (free-running) facility and an outdoor gym, as well as a running track and lots of green space for picnics and playing.

And if you’re exhausted by all this activity, then head off for some retail therapy: Corsham has a great range of independent shops offering everything from collectable comics to vintage wares, antiques and gloriously different gifts, plus The Table Gallery, owned by Paul Martin, of TV’s Flog It fame. You’ll also find great places to stop for a drink and something to eat, including the award-winning Methuen Arms (methuenarms.com).
