MedIcine Hat Golf & Country club CONDITIONS TERRIFIC AT MEDICINE HAT G&CC

Medicine Hat News

The weatherman co-operated this winter and general manager Cam Jacques of the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club says that is great news for the condition of his golf course as the 2019 season gets under way.

“What really hurts normally in a winter is the freeze- thaw, freeze-thaw conditions. That really hurts the greens,” he said. “This year, we didn’t have any of that. We had a really cold February but it stayed cold the whole time.”

As a result, the course north of the river that played host to the 2018 Canadian Junior and will be the host course for the 2020 Alberta men’s amateur is in pristine condition to begin the season.

“We actually had a late March opening,” said Jacques. “It was walking only, but we had some play on March

30 and 31. Our first full day was April 4.”

Membership has remained steady, said Jacques, but he admits courses in Medicine Hat “are not thriving, but we’re surviving.”

“There might be one too many golf course’s in Medicine Hat,” he said. “The Golf Foundation (of Canada) says the ideal number of people per capita is about 21,000. We’ve got one course for every 12,000 people, which puts a bit of a strain on us all.”

The number of members will likely remain close to last year’s figures, said Jacques, but he won’t know for sure until around the end of April. Recent ownership change at Desert Blume and a bit of turmoil at Riverview in Redcliff since last year may cause a little shuffling of golf-course affiliation, he said.

Head professional Wayne Mattson returns for his 19th year at the helm, with Connor Lunge in the associate professional role for the 10th year. Executive chef Brent Donkin also returns, while Jacques is in his 19th year as GM.

Jacques said Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club is doing its best to cater to future adult members — today’s juniors. Under-18s play for free when with an adult green-fee player or member, and there’s no charge for juniors’ club storage, either. Sunday nights have been set aside for a family night, with parents or grandparents urged to bring their children or grandchildren to the course for a few holes of golf and a reasonably-priced meal from a kids’ menu. “We want to encourage as much traffic as possible,” said Jacques.
