MARIAS VALLEY GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB
Bruce Penton, Medicine Hat News
The Marias Valley Golf and Country Club on the outskirts of Shelby, Mont., is a Wow! course, says its manager Larry Steinhoff.
“When you come over the hill and drive into the valley, it’s like ‘Wow, this is spectacular,’” said Steinhoff, who is helping to oversee a number of major projects that will add to the golfing experience at Marias Valley.
For one thing, a brand new clubhouse is under construction and is expected to be finished by mid- June. A new irrigation system is being installed, with 13 of the holes being affected “and there won’t be a blade of grass that doesn’t get lots of water,” said Steinhoff. The irrigation system involves 4,500 new sprinkler heads “and we’re almost done,” he said during an April 10 interview. “I think there’s only about 400 left to put in and the crews are working pretty quickly on it.”
The new clubhouse will be twice the size of the old one, which is scheduled for demolition. A new kitchen will be featured, as will a “beautiful” bar and an indoor golf
simulator will be installed so the game can be enjoyed even in the cold of winter.
Because the construction of the clubhouse won’t be completed before the 2019 golf season is under way, great deals are being offered, said Steinhoff. Green fees are only $47 for 18 holes until the first of June, when they’ll rise to $55 through the end of August, at which time they’ll drop back down to $47.
A couple of ‘stay-and-play’ promotions are popular with golfers, especially Canadians, said Steinhoff, adding that Canadians “are the backbone of our golf course.”
For instance, at both the Comfort Inn and Best Western in Shelby, golfers can have a one-night stay plus two rounds of golf at Marias Valley for $109.50 per person. It’s a perfect weekend getaway — drive down on a Saturday and play 18 holes; stay at one of the hotels that night; and play 18 more on Sunday morning. “Those deals have been tremendously popular,” said Steinhoff.

Great deals are also being offered to members because of the construction, said Steinhoff. For instance, if they purchased a membership last year, they are able to play for free this year. If a golfer is buying a 2019 membership — Canadians take note! — it’s being offered at 50 per cent off.
Marias Valley is a par-72 track offering four sets of tees, stretching from 5,025 yards through 6,784 from the tips. No. 8, a 600-yard par-5, is the toughest hole on the course, said Steinhoff. Golfers have to deal with a crossing ditch, a pond, a slough “and big trees guarding the green.”
“We have huge greens,” said Steinhoff, which adds to the pleasurability of playing the course.
The course “isn’t rated real hard, but there are a lot of trees, so you have to hit it straight,” he said.
And after hitting it straight all day, enjoy some food and beverages in the brand new clubhouse.
