Connaught Golf Club HEAD PRO CHANGE AT CONNAUGHT

Medicine Hat News

Some transitional events are going on at Connaught Golf Club this spring, but the 18-hole course in the centre of the city remains terrific and came through the winter well, according to executive professional Trevor Ellerman.

The transitional aspect is that head pro Derek Berger, who has been on the job for the past four years, is leaving his post, and moving over to Desert Blume, where he is part of the new ownership group and is expected to be a familiar face in the Blume pro shop. Ellerman said the Berger departure happened just recently, and it was a few days before the appointment of his replacement, Wade Waters, was confirmed. Waters had been head pro at Desert Blume.

“We’re happy to have Wade as our head professional,” said Ellerman. “He’s got a lot of experience and knowledge. “We expect it to be a seamless transition.” Connaught greens superintendent Dustin Zdan and his staff of about a dozen keep the course in wonderful condition, said Ellerman, and the course is already

playable. Membership numbers have shown a slight uptick over last year, and Ellerman says the

dual-membership arrangement with

Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club has been beneficial to both clubs.

“I think it gives us a competitive advantage to pair up like we have,” he said. “We share some advertising costs, some equipment. It helps to have some economies of scale.”

More people mingling around the golf course has resulted in increased revenues for the clubhouse and restaurant, said Ellerman, and hasn’t had a noticeable negative effect on tee-time availability.

A dual-course seven-day

membership costs $2,300, not including a $450 power cart card. A Connaught-only membership for seven days is $1,975. Five-day memberships (non-weekend play) are also offered, at rates of $1,925 for both courses, and $1,625 for Connaught only.

The usual assortment of men’s, women’s and seniors’ tournaments are scheduled at Connaught this year, and the club is playing host to the 55-plus Alberta Summer Games July 5-6.
