Trevor Moore focuses on golfing youth

Medicine Hat News

Golf professional Trevor Moore of Advantage Golf says one of his primary focuses is on junior golfers and he loves working with the kids. “Whether it’s private lessons, group lessons, or at my camp, it’s great to see the young people getting involved,” said Moore. “Every year we can see it slowly and steadily growing.”

Moore runs his Advantage Golf in partnership with the operators of Cottonwood Coulee golf course and says the junior program there is strong. He also works with golfer-students at Notre Dame Academy. In addition, he does quite a bit of speaking to young people, with themes such as motivation and goal-setting.

“Golf is such a great game,” he said. “People play it for their own reasons. Somebody might say I play because I want to shoot under 100. Somebody else might want to break 80. Another golfer might say ‘I want to play a whole round without losing a ball.’” Others, he said, play golf to enjoy the exercise and the company it offers.

“It’s a game you can play for life,” he said. “And it parallels life. You can hit great shots all day and get a couple of bad bounces and not score so well, or you could hit it badly, get a couple of lucky breaks, and come up with a good score.”

Moore also coaches the Medicine Hat College golf team and is enjoying seeing his son, Colton, 10, get interested in golf.

Moore has not been able to play a round of golf for the past seven years, due to an Achilles tendon/ankle problem. “I can do demos and take a shot or two and I can teach,” he said, “but I can’t play. I went out about three years ago with a five-iron and a handful of balls and I ended up on crutches for three weeks.”

Generally, though, good health is one of the benefits of the game of golf, especially if people choose to walk during the round. Moore says if you want to take up the game, or learn a few things to be better, stop by Cottonwood Coulee and see what his Advantage Golf has to offer.
