THE Halesworth Gallery is looking forward to another exciting


season of great


art in ancient alms house surroundings. From May 25th to June 12th three photographers, Neil Piper, Chris Wheeler and Katie Hayward will be showing their work. From June 15th to July 3rd, Kristy Campbell will be showing digitally created abstract-minimalist designs alongside Jan Martin who will be showing paintings and drawings. Jan is a well known Suffolk artist who curated the Halesworth Gallery for many years. Hilary Peters will also be showing. Peters is considered by many to be an artists’ artist and many local artists including Tony Casement, Tim Wilson, Alfie Demmon, Jack Crampton, Desmond Brett, Neil Hanger and Steve Buckeridge have lent work from their own collections for


this rare show by an


enigmatic artist. From July 6th to 24th the gallery will be taken over by the East Suffolk Plein Air Painters. This new group exists to promote painting and drawing from direct observation in the landscape and built environment.


The


exhibition will have two rooms of work made by members of the group on recent expeditions around the region and one room of live work made during the course of the exhibition in and around Halesworth. There will


be a number of painting and drawing sessions around the town to which all are invited to try their hand and contribute to the show. More details soon or check the website for further details. Rose Voutsas, Mark Croxford, Chris Doddridge will be showing their drawing, sculpture and painting work from July 27th to August 14th in what promises to be a playful and colourful show. From August 17th to September 4th we will be hosting a large community-based show open to any artists in the region interested in the concept. Entitled Transference, the project invites 100 artists to creatively recycle an archive of dry transfer lettering which they can use as material and inspiration for a work of art. Our annual and very popular Open Show will be taking place from September 7th to 25th and we finish the season with ‘I Saw It On The Grapevine’, an exhibition of the work of fourteen artists who have been invited to visit Valley Farm Vineyards in Wissett as a venue for creative exploration. This final show runs from September 28th to October 9th. followed was an astonishing two hours of verse, presented by the poets themselves. Good poems,


well-


ordered, seemed effortlessly to fix our attention. We were taken on journeys through time and space. Inventions, situations and memories made a rich banquet for the imagination. We travelled to far places, pondering the trials of being alive, of old age, of love and death. From green Welsh hills, to tropic seas, we heard of fabulous and exotic species, breathed other, clearer air, our thoughts ruffled by unexpected breezes. A country shepherd came to light. We remembered Oak Apple Day, old fugitive kings, and kings less fortunate, in Paris not so very long ago. Topically, we celebrated

Simon Armitage, once a social worker in the north, now newly appointed as Poet Laureate, and as if by some timely coincidence our sympathies were shaken by the agonies of young British citizens, neglected and displaced, here, at home, in one of the wealthiest nations under the sun. Twice in these crowded hours we paused at the edge of a pool along the road to Wissett. In silence, we caught the slow ripple of a fat carp-fish, lazily cutting the surface, some late afternoon under the last blue patch of watery sky.
