d d58 INTERVIEW / MIELE Next Generation

WITH THE BIGGEST PRODUCT LAUNCH IN THE COMPANY’S HISTORY, MIELE HAS COMPLETED A HUGE DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT, AND MANUFACTURING CHALLENGE. IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH DESIGNER KITCHEN & BATHROOM, CO-PROPRIETOR DR MARKUS MIELE EXPLAINS THE THINKING BEHIND THE BRAND’S BOLD STATEMENT OF INTENT...

ith its latest product update, German appliance brand

Miele decided it was not going to do things by halves. In fact, its Generation 7000 launch sees it renewing its entire product range of built-in kitchen appliances, from ovens and hob units to steam ovens, coffee machines through to dishwashers.

The changes cover pretty much all aspects of the company’s offering, with four new design lines providing the visual options, smart assistants delivering next-level cooking assistance, and connectivity to ensure a fully-integrated level of control to suit the user’s requirements. It all adds up to nearly 3,000 models when you take into account the different colour and spec variations.

To get our heads around the sheer scale of these grand plans, we spoke to Co- Proprietor Dr Markus Miele to find out how such a massive undertaking has come about...

DESIGNER: By any standards, Miele’s new product launch is on

a huge scale. In what ways does the new Generation 7000 range raise the bar for Miele's appliance offering?

Dr Miele: It will have a huge impact for the company as we are re-doing half of the products we produce. It has been like a wave that has swept through the whole business. Firstly, we have to think about design, and our design department has had to really think about what the world is going to look like in two, three, four or five years’ time. Then we have the different factories – a total of ten – who all had to synchronise on one ‘start of production’ timetable. That also of course resulted in a lot of work for our electronics department since we programme all of our electronics in-house, and manufacture 90% of it ourselves too so that means a huge workload.

So this wave has moved through all of these areas and now we have reached the launch, that work will move on to our 49 sales subsidiaries as well, and they are preparing their own launch events.
