ne of the


more unusual installations drawing the crowds in Milan during design week recently


was a piece by design collective Snarkitecture. Entitled Material Message, the work set out to tell the story of the 127-year history of Laufen, drawing the connection between the two key points in the production process – the origin, represented by the material, and the arrival point that is the finished product.


The large-scale set was housed in a space within the 5VIE district at Teatro Arsenale during FuoriSalone. Based


around a mountain of clay, the piece emphasised that only water and kaolin form the basis of the entire creative and productive process for making Laufen’s products. From clay to ceramic, from powdered earth to liquid slip, all the way to the silky polish of SaphirKeramik, the installation ‘photographed’ the material in its various stages. Laufen washbasins, stacked in a precise three-dimensional sequence, conveyed the concept of serial production of multiple repeated and exact products.


Snarkitecture is a New York-based collaborative design practice established to investigate the boundaries between disciplines. The name is drawn from Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of The Snark, a poem


describing the “impossible voyage of an improbable crew to find an inconceivable creature”. The practice has become known for large-scale projects, installations and objects. Alberto Magrans, Managing Director of Laufen, said: “Collaborating with eclectic personalities and visionary artists like Snarkitecture gives us an opportunity to look at our history and our experience in a new perspective, to live it through new codes of interpretation, with constant reference to our true identity.” d
