CORPS OF ENGINEERS
The U. S. Army Corps of Engi- neers Mountain Home Pro- ject Office oversees the op- eration and management of Norfork and Bull Shoals lakes. These large, multipurpose projects cover 160,000 acres of land and water in six coun- ties in northern Arkansas and southern Missouri. The projects serve a variety of functions, including flood reduction, hydropower gen- eration of electricity, munici- pal drinking water supply and provision of recreational opportunities. Built more than 50 years ago, the powerhouses are some of the largest hydropower producers of electricity in the Southwestern Power Administration system. Completed in 1944, Norfork Dam holds back waters from 1,806 square miles of drain- age. Overall construction
cost of the dam and power- house was approximately $28.6 million.
Bull Shoals Dam is on the White River, located seven miles north of Cotter. With its eight generators at full capacity, enough electricity is generated at Bull Shoals to
supply approximately 50,000 homes. Completed in 1951, with the powerhouse and shipyard completed in 1952, Bull Shoals saw the installa- tion of the final two generat- ing units in 1963. There are 6,036 square miles of drainage area above the
