CITY GOVERNMENT Briarcliff CITY OFFICIALS BRIARCLIFF – Briarcliff’s beginnings

date to the 1970s when the residential community called “Briarcliff by the Lake” was established. Later, the Briar- cliff Water and Recreation Improvement District No. 1 was formed. Briarcliff, population 235 in the 2012 census, was incorporated in August 1998. The city comprises about 1,500 acres and is bounded by AR Highway 5 South on the west, Norfork Lake on the east, AR Highway 341 on the north and Salesville on the south. The city has its own well and water

system, and a roads and buildings main- tenance department, which also over- sees the improvement district. New res- idents pay $135, including a $100 re- fundable deposit, to obtain a water-sys- tem connection. Fire protection for the town is provid-

ed by the Tracy Area Fire Department, which has a Class 5 Insurance Services Office rating. The fire department also has a substation within the city. Briarcliff has a 1 percent city sales tax,

with a total sales tax of 8.75 percent, combining city, 1.25 percent county and 6.5 percent state sales taxes. Briarcliff has a clubhouse/city hall, community swimming pool and nine- hole miniature golf course open and available to property owners and guests. The clubhouse has large rooms available for activities and events at a nominal fee.

The city parks and recreation com- mission has established a park with a picnic area and nature trail around the city’s pond. The pond is located in the middle of the city, containing fish stocked by the city with assistance from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commis- sion.
