MAKING THE MOST OF THE SUN

Renowned aesthetician Dr Claire Oliver (BDS) shares her top tips to look after our skin this summer - Did you know that the moment you step outside your skin feels the effects of the environment?

Pollution, toxins, wind and UV rays all cause damage to our skin over time. Intrinsic factors inherent in the natural ageing process also play a role and can contribute to enzyme loss, reduced collagen and dehydration. This combination of factors can speed up the development of free radicals, stopping the skins’ cells from performing at their best and, ultimately, leading to a decline in elasticity, resilience, tone and texture.

But let’s be clear, I’m not for one minute suggesting that you avoid the glorious weather we hope to see again soon and stay inside! Instead I would like to encourage you to look after your skin which forms the largest organ we have and is often the most overlooked. Great skincare is particularly important now because we’re living for longer. We can age better and we can live healthier, and the really good news is that whatever we do to help our skin makes a visible difference. Our skin rewards us with clearer, brighter, younger looking and healthier skin. We can’t stop the signs of ageing but we can significantly slow its progress!

Here are my four top tips on how to look after your skin when you’re out in the sun:

• Protect your skin by using a sunscreen designed to protect against both UVA and UVB. HeliocareR is clinically proven to protect your skin against environmental challenges and helps to prevent the signs of ageing. Each product provides high-level broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection and contains Fernblock®, a patented natural complex of powerful anti-oxidants that help prevent damage to skin cells. For enhanced protection and high-level SPF50, Heliocare® 360° is ideal for those who spend a lot time outdoors or who have fairer skin.

• Eat healthily. Be kind to your skin by eating a varied and balance diet full of antioxidant-rich fruit and healthy fats from oily fish and nuts. This should give you the optimal levels of the nutrients you need for radiant skin

• Drink plenty of water. By drinking at least eight glasses of water a day you will rid your body and skin of toxins thereby cleansing it. Water replenishes the skin tissue and increases its elasticity and can help delay the signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines

• Freshen up your skin with a non-surgical anti-ageing treatment. There are a range of treatments to ensure you can enjoy the sun whilst also looking after your skin. You can help repair any damage or loss of collagen underneath the skin with

Heat is applied directly onto the skin for a fraction of a second, whilst the length of the exposure varies depending on your treatment plan. This revolutionary treatment provides all the benefits of encouraging new collagen cells to renew and is a revolutionary replacement to laser resurfacing or chemical peels as no visible marks or downtime is generally experienced..

What Results Can I Expect? You will see results after just one session, however, we recommend a course of between three and four either four to six weeks apart for lasting tightness and tone and a naturally refreshed ap- pearance that can last up to two years.
