GOING THE EXTRA MILE ( IN FACT 918 MILES)


When I say I am prepared to go that extra mile for my clients what does it really mean? Let me give you an example, but using alternative names for obvious reasons.


George and Mildred divorced a few years ago. They have a daughter Bella who is 10 years old and who lives with her Mother but sees her father on regular occasions. George has remarried and has two children from his new relationship. Contact between Father and Bella has not always run smoothly as Mildred can be extremely difficult.


This summer George wanted to take Bella on holiday to Portugal with his wife and their two children. Mildred was adamant that she would not agree to a holiday out of the country so an application had to be made on behalf of George to take Bella on holiday.

Unfortunately at the time they were married George and Mildred lived in Norfolk but George now lives in Worcestershire. Previous proceedings had been in Norwich County Court so that is where I had to issue the application. At the first hearing Mildred made it clear that she would not agree even though she accepted that Bella wanted to go so the Judge had no choice but to set it down for an

evidentiary hearing. The round trip was 439 miles as the client had to drop me off in London as he had a business appointment there.


Two weeks later George and I travel from my offices at 4.50am and arrive in Norwich (188 miles) ready for the hearing. In order to frustrate the application Mildred decides not to turn up but eventually the Judge, (having none of it) proceeded to grant the application even giving Father interim residence for the duration of the holiday (and a few extra days) so that the police would assist in any handover problems.


That was not the end of it as, once armed with the Order, we then had to find Mildred and serve her with the Order and she is a further 72 miles away! Off we set and eventually locate Mildred and she is served with the Order. George again dropped me off in London (88 miles further) and then back to Worcester I travel (132 miles) a round trip of 480 miles and total travelling time of around 11 hours.


As I write this George and Bella are happily soaking up the sun in Portugal.
