values and our actions. The core of many philosophies and therapies lies in identifying and living our values, those things that are most important to us. Epictetus, a Stoic philosopher, wrote in Discourses, 1.26.15: “An important place to begin in philosophy is this: a clear perception of one’s ruling principle.” Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) uses a similar starting point. The six core therapeutic processes of ACT are: Contacting the present moment (Being in the here and now); Defusion (Watch your thinking); Acceptance (Open- ing up to things as they are); Self-as-context ( The observing self or pure awareness); Values (Knowing what matters) and Commitment to Action (Doing what it takes).


T Discovering what one values is for me the starting point of


healing and living a meaningful life. Fully experiencing and know- ing what one values begins with awareness of ourselves and what is happening in the present moment. Meditation, prayer, physical exercise, mindfulness practices and keeping a gratitude journal are beginning steps for being aware of the present moment and oneself. One exercise one can do is to set up scales. Writing down and examining areas of our lives such as: family; parenting; inti- mate relationships; friendships; work; education; physical selfcare; and involvement in community. We set up a scale from 1 -10 with 1 being not important at all to 10 which is extremely important.


Once the initial scale is complete, one can then reflect on the past week and rate how consistent our actions were in living our value. We can set up a second scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is not being at all consistent with the value and 10 is being completely consistent with the value. Developing scales that allow us to clearly see what is said to be important versus how consistent we are in living the value allows us to either change our behavior or change the relative importance of the said value.


Once I am clear about my values, then I have a blueprint on


how to make decisions and how to act in difficult and everyday situations. I always have the end in mind. Today I had a conversa- tion with a colleague. I asked how they solved puzzle mazes in the newspaper when they were young. They reported they started at the beginning and would often get stuck, sometimes frustrated and angry. I always started from the end and worked backwards. I believe that if I know where I want to be, it is easier to work back- wards to find where I am in relationship to where I want to be. It is in living our lives consistently in harmony with our values and actions that we can achieve happiness and meaning.
