natural gas (LNG). Polish shipping company Polferries will be building two new LNG-powered vessels with the intention of reducing the emission of particulates and carbon dioxide as well as sulphur and nitrogen oxide. “The expansion of the port means that the new LNG vessels will get space for themselves. They of course also need to be bunkered here in Ystad,” says Boström. Boström explained what the

largest environmental gain will be from the rebuild. “We will reduce the emissions and the increasing need for oil. Natural gas is of course a fossil source of power, but right now there is so much more natural gas available compared with oil. It is not a final solution but it is a good alternative – and we are already preparing for the transition to liquid biogas, LBG.” This environmental thinking is nothing new for Port of Ystad, with a target of becoming completely

fossil-fuel free in its own operations in 2019. Now, this goal has been reached. “Our ambition was to become

fossil-free next year. Of course it feels good to have achieved that goal already now,” says Boström, who adds: “It takes a long time and money to readjust, but we think it is important to put the same demands on ourselves as on the traffic we handle. That is decisive if the area where we operate is able to change.”

kilometres of trucks, which will also need somewhere to be parked before they drive aboard,” says Boström, who adds, “In total, we will add about 300,000 square metres of land. Though we do not need so much land now, we will need it in the future. We will use it rather than reclaiming land from the sea.” The environmental perspective of the project is the most interesting, especially since the EU-contribution also includes the financing of vessels that will bunker, transport and supply liquid
