Modern security papers line started up in Russia by Goznak

R

ussia’s Goznak Group has started operations at one of the world’s most modern mills

dedicated to the production of paper for banknotes and speciality applications. The plant at Krasnokamsk in the Perm region of central Russia was developed under the direction of Voith, the German technology group. Established in 1818, Goznak

offers a range of security products such as banknotes, coins, passports, postage stamps, revenue stamps, ID cards, secure documents, government orders and medals, security and speciality papers. Guests at the official opening last

September of the PM7 line, which coincided with Goznak’s 200th anniversary, included Russia’s deputy finance minister and Goznak chairman Alexej Moiseev,

and minister of industry, economic affairs and trade for the Perm region Alexej Chibisov. General director of Goznak

Arkady Trachuk said in his address to the guests: “Within a few years, we worked with the designers, equipment suppliers and contractors to create a production complex that is one of the best in the world.” Voith was involved with the

development of the facility from the beginning. The technology group was responsible for the overall planning, providing expertise and technologies. A high degree of automation enables Goznak to produce paper with modern security features. A key component of the paper machine is the forming section, which contains a MasterVat, an optimised Uniflow vat in which the watermark is created at the same time as the banknote paper,

and a ShortFormer for the first ply of the two-ply papers. These enable the integration of reliable security features or multi-coloured watermarks. The high degree of automation

in Krasnokamsk is the cornerstone for the security of the papers. Automatic quality control is used in all phases of paper production, which increases the efficiency of the plant and helps to substantially reduce raw material losses and running costs. “Through their very close

collaboration based on a spirit of trust and partnership, Voith and Goznak have created a benchmark for future plants with the facility in Krasnokamsk,” says Wolfgang Neuss, director sales and technology for banknote and security paper machines at Voith. Goznak has annual capacity

to produce up to 11,000 tons of security banknote paper, seven

billion banknotes, 3.5 billion coins, 40 million passports, 30-45 million postage stamps (depending on the size and the printing technology), along with federal special and excise stamps and other products. Annual sales are 46 billion roubles (US$703 million) a year. The joint stock company has

eight branches: the Moscow Printing Factory, the Perm Printing Factory, the Moscow Printing Works, the Saint-Petersburg Paper Mill, the Krasnokamsk Paper Mill, the Moscow Mint, the Saint- Petersburg Mint and the Research Institute.
