EDUCATION 065

Want to go to space school?

It is now 20 years since the fi rst University of Kent Space School experience – and the Kent Space School is now open for new applicants. This is a residential course intended to inspire young people aged

15-18 to expand their interest in science. It involves activities such as designing, building and launching rockets, night sky observations, astrophysics and space science workshops.

This year – on 20th July – marks 50 years since

man fi rst set foot on the moon, so what a great time to apply for a place. Taking place from 2nd-4th August, the residential course is run by academics, postgraduate and undergraduate students plus school of physical sciences alumni.

CLOCKING OFF

Revision should be well underway for GCSE students, and particularly for IB (International Baccalaureate) students, with 7th May kicking off the exam season. But it has come to light that the modern age is posing a simple problem for many teenagers. It seems that our young people are having a bit of diffi culty telling the time! Teachers have

clocked the fact that pupils are struggling to read the correct time on analogue timepieces as they are so accustomed to seeing a digital representation of time on devices such as smart

phones, computers, cookers, at bus and railway stations, that apparently this tends to add to stress at exam time, with some pupils having to ask the time in order to work out how long they have left to complete their paper. There have been many complaints from

students who have read a traditional clock

incorrectly and subsequently run out

of time during their exam. As a result, we’re told, many schools are now replacing their clocks or installing a secondary digital device alongside the traditional. It seems that time is moving on...
