‘theRe were shepherds abiding in the fields keeping watch over their flocks by night……….' I sang those well known

words from handel’s messiah many times as a boy chorister, and they came alive for us again on Sunday 23rd december. We were sitting watching television when our French carer, nadia thought she heard singing. We listened, and lo there was singing outside in Park Lane. nadia opened the front door

and switched on the porch light and there was a group of 13 singers, 11 women and two men. We welcomed them into our sitting room to sing carols for us and the first was ‘While shepherds watched their flocks by night……’ and then another. In a brief conversation I remembered that 73 years ago the following night, Christmas eve, I was serving with 1st Indian Armoured division in Lebanon. our hQ was a former French army barracks in a village called Ablah which lies at the southern entrance to the Bekaa Valley which runs north/south between the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon mountains. the Bekaa Valley became notorious many years

later as the base for hisbollah, and one of the places where terry Waite was held prisoner. We were a mix of Indian and

British officers and men, and at midnight on Christmas eve I attended mass in the chapel. As we came out into the freezing, bright, starlit night at about 12.45am, there was thick frost, almost like a snowfall, and, as I crossed the barrack square, to go to my quarters, I stopped for I heard pipes playing high up in the mountains which surrounded us, some in the far distance. As every Boy Scout knows sound travels a very long way in clear air at night, and, as I write this, I can still hear those pipes being played by ‘shepherds abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flocks by night.’ Suddenly the Bible story came alive, right there in our sitting room. Before our carollers left they

sang ‘Fideste Fidelis - oh come all ye faithful’, complete with descant, in which we joined. What a joyous few minutes: we thank you carollers for sharing them with us, and for reviving memories of long ago. Margaret and Jack Storer Epiphany

I mentIoned in my last piece that the convoy was on its way back but due to several problems (challenges?) it did not get home until Sunday 16th december. When it left Chios for Athens three refugees who had been living rough, stowed away in the 40-ton truck. they remained undetected until the convoy reached Athens and, as it is impossible to open the truck from inside, they slashed the very heavy, and very costly, side ‘curtains’ and disappeared. Charles is convinced it was an inside job and that an official on Chios was bribed, for the doors remained firmly locked! then, near Cologne, the fuel pump on one of the 7.5 tonners failed and the truck had to be towed to a garage in Cologne. the pump had been professionally

overhauled

and checked before departure at considerable expense and was under warranty, but the company refused to help without seeing the pump. It had to be returned by courier to the company which tested it, and said there was nothing wrong, and shipped it back to the garage in Cologne. All this was carried out during the busy Christmas period. Finally, I can say that Charles and Bev flew to Cologne on monday 7th January, via Southend Airport, and drove the truck back to england arriving home just before midnight the same day: a wonderful effort but it has been a great strain, both emotionally and financially! In recent weeks attention

has been drawn to migrants crossing the english Channel in inflatable rubber boats, and Border Force/Rn vessels are being brought back from the mediterranean to patrol the Channel. once again, the government was caught off

guard. does no minister/ decision maker understand that desperate people do desperate things, or that criminal gangs – including British-will exploit their desperate situation by charging exorbitant sums of money for a passage to england?

People don’t

become migrants/refugees by choice, but to seek safety, and a future for their children! Just as we would! meanwhile, out of the

public eye, migrants continue to arrive in europe. Whilst the convoy was still in Chios two boat loads arrived: one had 35 frightened and soaking wet people including 18 children. night after night they arrive and volunteers of all nationalities wait on the beach with torches, ready to guide those seeking safety through the rocky waters to dry land. Walls and barricades are not going to help for, as the world’s population grows inexorably, the situation is going to worsen. I believe the situation can only be resolved by global co-operation. But where are the men and women of vision and compassion who will put the needs of humanity before self interest? Amidst all these problems,

and the delays due to the Christmas holiday, compounded by the fiasco of Brexit with the continuing uncertainties, planning for the next convoy has already started. I cannot say when it will be but sometime round about easter is the most probable time. Please watch this space. meanwhile our garage is ever ready to receive your donations. thank you.
