Halesworth & Southwold Community News February 2019 17 Wenhaston Village Hall


SINCE the New Year Wenhaston Village Hall has been enjoying a face lift! We were very fortunate in receiving private donations for the purpose of re-surfacing our car park, which had become very worn with potholes. We were also awarded grants from Suffolk Coastal District Council, Wenhaston with Mells Hamlet Parish Council, Richard Smith, Suffolk Coastal County Councillor and Mike Gower, Suffolk Coastal District Councillor. We now have a very smart new car park and front entrance to the hall, including a designated disabled bay, two disabled ramps and safer steps and access around the building. Many thanks to all our donors and grant funders and to A Waterfields & Sons Ltd of Diss who made such a superb job of it. At the same time, following successful fundraising during the year, we had the main hall and stage area decorated by Peter Jolly of Reydon. The new hall is now looking very bright and cheerful with refurbished blinds to suit the new décor. New lighting and screens for the stage were kindly donated and fitted recently and a grant for fire safety upgrades from our District Councillor Mike Gower, enabled us to treat the stage curtains with fire retardant. Trust also kindly awarded us a grant which has enabled us to re-seal the village hall floor and this has been carried out by Roger Hyde Floor Specialists of Hadleigh and now looks very smart. Our café bar area was recently upgraded, funded by our 100 club donations and a team of volunteers has


decorated the kitchen. All in all, we can offer our


hall hirers first class facilities for all types of hire, stage events, film evenings and functions and we also have two meeting rooms for smaller get togethers. We are also very fortunate to have a Post Office at the hall which is open every weekday morning from 9am to 1pm. Do come along and see

A recipe book is on sale so you can try some out for yourself. We have a very popular regular monthly Produce Craft and flea Market on the last Saturday of each month also from 10am to 12.30pm, with a large choice of produce and products on sale. The next one is on Saturday 23rd February. There are many activities regularly taking place in the hall, so why not join in some of them. We can offer art and crafts, art classes, badminton, bingo, exercise classes, knitters and stitchers, kurling, Qi Gong, ukulele, table tennis, a photographic group, the WI, and WEA lecture series. We also regularly hold other events and have a regular cinema group and other fundraising activities. THIS will be the fourth annual WinterLight! event and the first without the support of Ali Hopkins, Manager of the Library. Ali welcomed the idea of the Festival when it first sprang up between an inventive Green volunteer (Nicky Rowbottom) and a creative librarian (Meraylah Allwood) and supported it enthusiastically, as she did the joint Library-Millennium Green annual Plant Sale and so many other community-based activities that have flourished under her management. Ali will be badly, badly missed by us all. This year WinterLight! happens at the end of the half-term holiday on Sunday 24th February. Starting at the Library, the Oxblood Mollies will dance us into the very beginning of the evening’s story. You need to be there by 5.30pm at the latest to catch the beginning of the story and help the story-teller start the magic. We will then move through the town into the Green, along the Track (hard surface all the way) while the
