The Herbert Protocol
This is a risk reduction tool to be used in the event of an adult with care and support needs going missing. It consists of a form that contains vital information about a person at risk that can be passed to the police at the point the person is reported missing.
A recent photograph of the person should also be kept with the form. It is not intended to replace existing safeguarding and security measures
Carers, family members and friends can complete the form in advance with information such as:
• • • •
medication required, mobile numbers,
places previously located, a photograph
In the event of your family member or friend going missing, the form can be easily handed to the police to reduce the time taken in gathering this information.
The Herbert Protocol initiative is named after George Herbert, a War veteran of the Normandy landings, who lived with dementia.
It is aimed at finding those who go missing quickly and safely. The protocol encourages families, carers, friends or neighbours to hold information about the person with Dementia that can help the emergency services find them if they go missing. The form provides the Police Services and other agencies that might be involved in a search with vital information about the person. This includes a description, a photograph, and details of their daily routine and significant places in their life. This information is kept somewhere safe where it can be accessed quickly when it is required. Please can you support this initiative by understanding what the Herbert Protocol is and informing as many people as possible? You can download the form from
