Scientists writing in the journal BMC Public Health suggest young people in England
aren’t just drinking less alcohol, but more of them aren’t drinking any alcohol at all. According to the researchers’ findings, the
Mums advised to wait a year between pregnancies
Current World Health Organisation guidelines suggest mothers should ideally wait 24 months or no fewer than 18 months between having a baby and getting pregnant again. But researchers writing in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine say waiting a year to 18 months may help reduce any health risks for both the mother and the baby. Women who have smaller gaps between their pregnancies,
however, may increase their risk of complications such as a premature birth and a smaller baby.
number of 16 - 24-year-olds who don’t drink has increased from 18 per cent in 2005 to 29 per cent in 2015.
Stressed women have higher infertility risk
Higher levels of stress are linked to lower odds of conceiving in women – but not in men, suggests a study by Boston University School of Medicine experts.
Published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the study also found the association was stronger among women under the age of 35.
“Although this study does not definitely prove that stress causes infertility, it does provide evidence supporting the integration of mental health care in preconception guidance and care,” says Amelia Wesselink, the study’s lead author.
