[EDITOR’S NOTE]

As the year winds to a close, you are probably already deep into your business planning for 2019. With that in mind, we have a lot of very pragmatic content in this issue to help you start the year off on the right foot. Many in our industry were affected by Hurricane Harvey in 2017 as it swamped the Houston area, and sooner or later nearly everyone who works outdoors will face severe weather of some form. In this issue we hear from Tom Gordon, co-training director for IUOE Local 14-14B, as he shares strategies to help make your operation weather-ready.

Knowing the most common problems can be a good start to avoiding them. Te Mazzella Companies Lifting and Rigging Learning Center – a great online resource – shares with us the six most common problems they find during a rigging gear inspection. And they include very practical steps to address each of them that you can put into action right away. In our WRE Advisor, we “talk business with Howard” once again, this time about

risk taking. When we talk about risk in our industry, you might immediately think about jobsite safety. And you should – lifting operations have very substantial inherent risk. But if you own, operate or manage any business, or even any part of one, business advisor Howard Lewinter explains why he believes you have to take business risks to be successful. And in our Update, you’ll find a preview of many of 2019’s most promising industry

events. We start with ten events where lifting, rigging and load securement are a central focus for the conference or exposition, and then cover ten more (plus one in 2020) where our industry is not at the heart of the event, but has some role to play. We hope to attend a good number of events in 2019, and we’ll keep you posted on these as more complete information becomes available. We thank the many of our Premium Listing members who participate in Wire Rope

Exchange, and encourage all of you to take a look through the product listings in our Catalog – including many new or updated listings We have some great company profiles in development for upcoming issues, and we are

always interested in learning about – and writing about – your business. If you are working on something or reaching a milestone that you’d like to share, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’ll take it from there. Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a prosperous new year!

Best Regards,
