Jean, 89, steppingdown fromhermagazine role


IT WILL be with some amuse- ment that Jean Hammond reads aboutherself inDownsMail after working for more than a decade onHeadcorn parishmagazine. At 89, Jean is handing over her


title as magazine chairman, after getting involved 14 years ago when her husband died. She said: “Ithas beenthe best ed-


ucation. I knew nothing about the village when we moved to HawkenburyfromLondonin1985. “Now I know so many people,


the issues and the wonderful things this village has to offer. “I hope those moving here will


recognise that the magazine is a fantastic way to get to know the community andmake friends.” Magazine secretary Peg Parn-


ham said: “Since the days when the magazine was typed to the computer-based production of today, Jean has been an incredibly active chairman, always accompa- nied by lists and copious notes!”


Itwas notes such as thesewhich


were handed to Jean by Colonel Blick Waring’s widow when she took the chair in 2004. Jean joked: “When themagazine


committee realisedIwas computer literate, that was the beginning of my undoing! I amquite organised and have loved finding stories and getting newcorrespondents. “While it is a churchmagazine it


is our parish magazine, and has something for everyone.” The teamof volunteersproduces

News Fair atHunton


THE church, churchyard and vil- lage hall at Hunton will host the community’s Christmas Fair and parade on Saturday,December 8. Stalls will offer gifts and activi-


ties and a large model railway is likely toprove a big crowdpleaser. The festive lantern parade starts
