WW1 remembered |News Special Sunday to remember
THOUSANDS of local people turned out for the Remembrance Sunday service at the War Memorial inMaidstone.
A parade through the town cul-
minated in the moving tributes to war dead from all conflicts, but particularly to thosewho perished in the 1914-18GreatWar on the an- niversary of its official end. Among the dignitarieswereMP
Helen Grant, the Mayor of Maid- stone Cllr David Naghi, the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Kent County Council leader Paul Carter, MEP Diane James, borough council leader Martin Cox and senior members of the military, police and emergency services. A two-minute silence was ob-
served faultlessly. The crowdwas so large this year
that it stretched back to the bridge over the RiverMedway. Elsewhere beacons were lit and
church bells pealed across the vil- lages, such as at Sutton Valence where hundreds attended its offi- cial lighting by Sir Hugh Robert- son, formerMP.
