Fly-tipping is ‘major rural problem’ now

A POLICE crackdown on fly-tip- ping offences resulted in two ar- rests, hundreds ofpounds infines and two vehicles being seized. Officers from the Rural Task

Force held a day of action on No- vember 13 to tackle the illegal movement and disposal ofwaste. They stopped 10 vehicles for

checks, resulting in fines totalling £900. A Ford Transit was seized and

the driver issued with a fixed penalty notice in King Street, after itwas found to have no licence for carrying or transferringwaste. A Renault Master van was also

seizedafter itwas stoppedinLoose Road and found to be uninsured. Fly-tipping is a major issue in

rural areas, especially Headcorn, Leeds, Langley, Staplehurst and Sutton Valence, but is largely un- enforced by Maidstone Borough Council. Piles of rubbishare left forweeks, even months, by criminals who

knowtheywill get awaywith it. Builders’ rubble, caravans,burnt-

out vehicles, garden rubbish, kitchen and bathroom units are often dumped in country roads. The RSPCA reported recently a

dead horse and asbestos being dumped inGreen Lane,Chart Sut- ton. The problem is set get worse if, as expected,KentCountyCoun- cil introduces a charge to use Tovil tip. Borough councillor Gill Fort, who has campaigned for action against fly-tipping for years, said:

“There is no deterrent when the borough does not take enforce- ment against offenders. “Everywhere I go, I hear people

complain about the problem yet nothing is done. I expect it to get worsewhen charges come in.” Sergeant DarrenWalshaw said:

“Fly-tipping is a large scale issue which blights rural areas and our town centres.” The CLA, the rural landowners’

group, worries a tip chargewill re- sult in illegal dumping
