NEWS TRAINING WITH IMPACT

SKILLCERT was founded by Steffan Edwards in November 2015 ahead of the introduction of the apprenticeship levy in April 2017. Steffan identified an opportunity to work with clients who were new to the apprenticeship market place and set out to create a qualification that delivered results-driven training and assessment for employers and staff. This model has allowed SKILLCERT to become a leading provider of specialist apprenticeship qualifications in the recycling, manufacturing and recycling sector and they have a particular focus on ‘offender management’. Here, Steffan, pictured leſt, explains more about the company

As managing director Steffan, can you tell us a little about what your company currently does? We are working with over 30 leading employers and are currently operational in England, Wales, Scotland and Dubai. Manufacturing clients include DS Smith, Celsa Steel, TRW Automotive, Microsemi Conductor and Coveris Packaging. Financial clients include Vitality and Go Compare and recycling clients include DS Smith, Renewi, Suez, South Wales Wood, Cardiff, Harrow, and Carmarthenshire Council’s recycling divisions. We also support waste management training for staff at Bee’ah, the UAE’s leading integrated recycling and waste management company.

You do a lot with ‘offender management’. What does that mean and how does it work? SKILLCERT delivers an employer-led ‘through the gate’ programme across seven UK prisons. This initiative is the first of its kind for the recycling sector and involves the delivery of an intensive industry recognised Level 2 WAMITAB programme while candidates work in the recycling division during their last six months of sentence. Learners develop sector specific skills in recycling to enhance their skill base and make them more employable and attractive to recycling employers post release.

In addition to delivering the qualification the SKILLCERT

employability team also supports and prepares learners for interviews with one of the recycling ‘employer partners’. These include, Suez, EMR, FCC, Mid UK, Renewi and Paint 360.

How many people have you helped so far and what kind of feedback to you get from them? We have currently supported: • 194 candidates through their WAMITAB qualification • 97 currently released to date • 25% of released candidates have successfully progressed into employment

We are extremely proud of the social impact of our training interventions. On a personal level we give individuals a second chance and greatly increase the opportunity for them to successfully integrate back into society and reduce their risk of reoffending. From a wider social perspective, the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) currently estimates that the cost of housing an individual per annum is £35K and a report in The Guardian says that the financial cost to society of re- offending is around £11bn. It is therefore apparent that our interventions benefit us all.
