Deben Leisure Centre is officially open


THE £3.5 million redevelopment of Deben Leisure Centre was marked by an official re-opening ceremony on Saturday 6th October. Suffolk Coastal’s Chairman, Cllr Nicky Yeo carried out the all important opening duties alongside Cllr TJ Haworth- Culf, Suffolk Coastal’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for customers, communities and leisure. Cllr Yeo, said: “This £3.5


million redevelopment is the first significant investment in the facility since a roof was added to the pool in 1984, and I think we have provided a fantastic facility that will serve the needs of the community for the foreseeable future. I would like to thank the Council’s Leisure Development Partners, Pulse Design and Build, our operators, Places


Leisure and Sport England for the £500,000 grant to help fund the facility. closed in September 2017 to undergo a £3.5 million refurbishment, and is the first project to be completed in Suffolk Coastal’s five year programme to improve leisure facilities and encourage more people to become active and fit. The facility was designed


with the Council’s development partner, Pulse Design & Build. Matt Johnson, Executive


Director of Pulse Design and Build said: “The redevelopment of Deben Leisure Centre really showcases what can be achieved within the parameters for an existing facility, all on time and to budget. It is exciting to see the local community using and enjoying this impressive, modern and sustainable leisure centre we have created.” Background Information: One of Suffolk Coastal’s


10 priorities in its Business Plan focuses on the need to provide high-quality, modern leisure centres that the whole community can enjoy, with state- of-the-art equipment, that come at no additional cost to the tax payer. The work builds on the


progress made by the Leisure Strategy formed in 2014, which sets out how improvements to the leisure provision will be made across the district, over the next


10 years. A five year programme was


launched, with Deben Leisure Centre as the first facility to be upgraded, followed by Leiston and then Felixstowe. The work on Deben Leisure Centre was completed in June 2018. If you would like to stay up
